What is an extract

To extract means to pull or to draw out, when you apply this concept to plant materials such as tonic herbs and medicinal mushrooms, it essentially describes the process used to obtain the compounds responsible for the plants medicinal profile. These compounds are generally extracted using a solvent such as water or alcohol. Each method is beneficial, and use is dependant on the particular active constituent/s we wish to extract. Alcohol is used to draw out the fat-soluble components of the herbs, such as triterpenoids. While water is used to obtain the herbs immune-boosting polysaccharides. Some herbs contain active constituents that are both fat and water soluble, this is where we bring in the dual extraction method. Here both water and alcohol are used to acquire the herb’s full medicinal profile.

What is the nutritional breakdown of mushrooms?

Generally speaking, mushrooms are roughly 25% protein, 58% carbohydrates and 3% fat. The rest is vitamins and minerals. 1 gram would be around 3-4 calories.

How are extracts dried & powdered

After extracting our herbs in either water or water and alcohol (for a dual-extraction), the concentrated liquid extract is dried using an ultra high-speed spray dryer. During this process, the herbal liquid concentrate is atomised into fine droplets, which are thrown radially into a moving stream of hot gas. The temperature of the droplets is immediately increased and fine droplets become dried instantaneously. The whole drying process is completed in just a few seconds, ensuring herbal potency is retained at the maximum level.

In the spray drying process, heat and mass transfer while drying occurs in the air, protecting the vapour films surrounding the extract, preventing it from being damaged by the heat. This protective envelope of vapour keeps the particle at the saturation temperature. As long as the particle does not become “bone-dry”, evaporation is still taking place and the temperature of the solids will not approach the dryer temperature. This is why many heat-sensitive products can be spray dried easily at relatively high temperatures. The herbal extracts are then sifted through a fine mesh, to achieve a uniform consistency to the final product.

How are test done for purity & quality

Quality is our corner stone, we would never just sell herbs without being sure about the source, exract, & test reports. Ensuring the highest purity & quality is what are are passionate about! We do various rounds of quality checks which include tests done at the time of sourcing the raw fruit bodies ( not ready powders or 100% mycelium ), testing upon extraction for any kind of heavy metals, impurities and finally third party labs. We have certificates of analysis for all our products. If you would like to review one, please email us at support@rootedactives.com

What are active compounds

We believe in the medicinal value of the whole herb. We use traditional extraction methods to ensure that the full range of medicinal compounds and energetic qualities are extracted from our herbs. We feel this results in a potent product that is just as nature intended. We never synthetically isolate, manipulate or standardise our herbs for particular active constituents. We test our herbs to ensure that certain active compounds, such as Beta D Glucans, Polysacharides, Triterpenes, cordycepins, sterols, lentinans, vitamins etc.

Storage

– How do I store my Rooted products

Remember you’ve bought the highest quality 100% pure mushroom/herb extract, there’s no additives or starches added to absorb moisture. To keep your herbs super fresh and ready to rock, we advise keeping them stored in a cool dry space. Ideally your kitchen pantry. Always leave your desiccant (the little white pillow in your jar or bag) in there to absorb moisture.
